As such, we decided to do a "repeat", and install one on Asante. So nice, so easy. The hardest part about the relatively plug-n-play install was fishing the wires down our steering pedestal, into the engine room, and finally to the "master" VHF at our nav station. This is why marine electricians get paid the big bucks: running wires is not only incredibly time consuming, but requires an ungodly amount of patience. With the help of some brute force, an hour's time and a few drops of dish soap (for lube!), we finally muscled that wire where we wanted it. This little mic will make life just a little bit easier, and when you live on a boat - all those "little" conveniences add up!
Over and out!

Never heard it called a "repeater", but that is okay. Is it Standard Horizon? Do you use a speaker, or just the one on the mic?
@Anonymous - what do you call it? We've heard several industry people call it that and I believe the folks at West Marine even called it a repeater? Anyway...we have no speaker, the mic works great. It's actually quite loud when the volume is all the way up. It's ICOM.
Ours was a snap to install - it's wireless (uses bluetooth technology)
Remote mic. There is a device called a repeater, but it is different animal. Anyway, you motivated me to look into a RAM3 for Standard Horizon, which is what my VHF is. I like the idea of running wiring down steering pedestal.
@Robert - very cool!!!
@Anon - well that definitely makes more sense!! Remote mic. Hmm....very good. Yeah, we really like ours. Good luck!
After spending far more on various other solutions to gave the handheld more range, we also did the one in the cockpit -- a HUGE improvement and real safety feature, not just convenience.
Standard Horizon calls them a "RAM" unit for remote access mic -- never heard repeater before your post . . .
Carolyn - thanks. I am changing the wording here in the blog to avoid further confusion for folks because now you are the second to say something. RAM it is!! Makes way more sense than "repeater" anyway. Scott and I will just call it "repeater" amongst ourselves...haha.
